What will the punishment be for a class 2 misdemeanor as a minor?

I am a minor in the state of Colorado me and two other friends where caught shop lifting in Walmart for the first time EVER i have never been in trouble with the law before but the total for the things we all stole put together was $482 which was mostly from what my friends took but the store got all their items back. From what i heard its a class 2 misdemeanor but iv'e heard from people that it doesn't always involve a fine for minors it can be payed off with a lot of community service. Our trial is coming up but i'm trying to get an idea as for what the punishment or fine might be so i can determine just how much money ill need to raise as i am the one having to pay for it. Thank you if you can help that would be great!

Based on the description you provided, you have a strong possibility for a deferred judgment/sentence. I would highly recommend you consult with a criminal defense attorney. you do not want the conviction out there messing up your pristine criminal history! Paying off restitution is always a positive approach to trying to get a matter settled! Good Luck

In juvenile cases, under these facts and absent a criminal record of any kind, you'll most likely receive diversion (same as a deferred judgment mentioned above). Different counties call it different things. There will be a theft class and some community service involved as well. Good luck!

My colleagues are correct -- an offer of diversion (a deferred judgment and sentence with probation) is likely. I would never send anyone to a juvenile court without representation.

Are you in a Municipal Court(General Sessions in Denver)? Some municipal courts can be a bit heavy handed. If you are in a municipal court, being under 18 does not prevent you from being prosecuted, If you receive a deferred judgment and sentence, the fact of your arrest may stay on your record. After your case is completed, you can see about getting the record of the arrest sealed. If you are set for trial, it sounds like you may be heading down the wrong path. You may want to seek some legal help.
