If one has 2 DUIs in GA 10 yrs ago, has reinstated license & clean record ever since, the law would have him forever damned?!

said person has just earned his masters degree, is the father of 2 young children, AND happens to be my husband, but will never be able to support his family b/c he will be blacklisted for eternity for doing something stupid over a decade ago? Nothing to be done? Make a mistake & you may as well end your life. What a wonderful legal system we have put in place. Great job guys.

I agree that it's an unfortunate situation. Georgia doesn't allow pretrial diversion or first offender for DUI. Once you plead guilty or no contest to a DUI or convicted during a trial, it remains on your record forever.

2 duis. Not just a stupid mistake. Twice. I know many people with criminal records supporting their family. It makes it harder but not nearly impossible. This site is for legal questions. Air your grievances out elsewhere.

There can be life-long consequences to criminal acts. How do we know that there is nothing that can be done without actually knowing all the facts and circumstances? One thought is to stop blaming others and look into what he can do to support his family, like working for himself, starting his own business. Lots of people have duis on their records and they do find employment.

I don't see a question here. If you are dissatisfied with the system the way it is then make better choices when you vote. We are all defense attorneys who fight for our clients' rights and we agree with you! So your rant is misplaced here. Best of luck to your husband!

Whoa!! Anyone smart enough to earn a Masters Degree is smart enough to figure out how to use it to get a decent job. Although, I would encourage him to translate it into some entrepreneurial endeavor of his own. Getting and keeping a super positive attitude is a necessity given the difficulties all of you face right now. Count your resources, be grateful for what you have already, set some achievable daily, weekly and monthly goals in areas outside of your usual "box". Buy and read uplifting books and turn the damned TV OFF! As far as I can tell these terrible laws were passed by your local state and federal congress under pressure from political actions groups like MADD and the NHTSA. Ask too whether your husband bit the bullet and hired the absolute best DUI specialist he could find or did he like many take students ten years ago take the cheapest way out, thinking, heck it won't matter down the road..... Like the Eagles wrote, " Get over it" and move on.

What do you men condemned? I think if you didn't know him you'd feel differently. Most folks want DUI drivers in jail for life.

If those convictions were 10 years ago, he should have his driver's license reinstated by now, and he should be out earning a living. The forever damned part would be the amount of premiums he must pay to get auto insurance, but he should now be driving on a reinstated driver's license.
