One of my close friends talks to me about how her father punishes her and she is not sure if it is considered child abuse. Help?

Shes said that once her and her mother got in a fight and that she had a bit of an attitude so she marched upstairs and screamed on her way up. Her father got really mad at her and ran up the stairs after her. She ran into a bedroom and hid behind a dresser from him bc this was not the first time he scared her. He found her shortly. She huddled into a ball to try to cover her head but he grabbed her by the hair and picked her up and sorta shoved her onto the bed where he got really close to her face with his teeth gritted and she didnt know if it was a bunch or what but she felt a blow to her shoulder her mom finally came up after like 2 minutes bc she was screaming and hermom yelled tostop. She said she has been hit with a belt multiple times on different occasions thatleft red linemarks

State law requires that if you believe or feel that a child is being abused - you must contact DCS. There is an number to call. 877-237-0004. This is a toll free call.

I don't practice in Tennessee and different states have different definitions of what is abuse and what is permissible discipline but it sounds abusive to me. In addition to reporting the abuse as Atty. Crawford suggested, you should encourage your friend to talk to the police, child protective services (CPS), a counselor or teacher. Understand that the police may arrest the father, CPS may remove her from her home (if her mother isn't willing or able to protect her from her abusive father) and they may just try to engage the parents in services to prevent further abuse.
