When I die I currently have my sister as the person that I will leave my asset to; a bank account (checking and savings and a $250,000 term life policy. I have ZERO other assets. I want to remove her and designate someone else; (The Austin Humane Society - A 503c non-profit) When I die who will get legal rights to my assets first?.
Did you make your sister the payable on death (POD) designee on your bank account, or is she a joint account holder? If she is the POD, then you can contact your bank regarding changing that information. You should contact your insurance company regarding changing the beneficiary to the non-profit. It also would be wise to sit down with an estate planning attorney to make sure that there are not assets out there that you are thinking about (like digital assets, personal possessions, cars, etc.). Many offer free consultations so you have nothing to lose by siting down with someone.
If you die without a will (intestate) the Texas Intestate Succession laws would apply. Usually everything goes to the following persons in the order listed: (1) surviving spouse; (2) children; (3) parents; (4) siblings; and so on. That list also varies depending on the type of property (community or separate, real or personal), if there are children that are not your surviving spouse's children and other factors. Good luck to you.

With respect to the life insurance, as long as she is the primary beneficiary, it will pass outside the estate. If the life insurance claim is delayed or denied, your sister can retain a life insurance attorney to resolve it
