Look at the terms of the contract. Most contracts require the final payment to be made on the day the job is finished. Not sure what your contract says, however, if you have a written contract. If you don't have a written contract, then you have other things to consider. What were the oral terms of the contract, in other words, what did you verbally agree to? These things must be considered before the painter is found in breach. If you paid nothing on the contract, and the contract says you should pay a certain amount, then the painter has a legal right to stop his painting.

The contract will govern the nuts and bolts of this transaction so that should be reviewed first. Depending on what it says, you may be exposed to a mechanics lien on your property. Contact an attorney who specializes in contracts in Colorado.
