The answer to this question depends on what grounds you are appealing on. Different appellate issues have different standards of review. I suggest you contact an attorney who deals with appellate cases to provide him or her with further information on your specific circumstances. Best wishes!

There is not enough information to answer this question, because that depends upon what specifically is being appealed. The question is a good one, but the answers are very complex and subtle. I highly recommend you consult with an appellate attorney--there are some on who handle federal appeals. Failing that, be prepared to do some extensive research in a law library.

It is impossible to answer this question without a complete understanding of the facts and law at issue in the appeal. A jury trial can result in an appeal from a legal question, which would be de novo; an appeal from an evidentiary decision or other discretionary decision, which is reviewed for abuse of discretion; or, an appeal from the verdict itself, which might be a substantial evidence question. And different issues can result in an interplay of the standards. As others have suggested, an appeal to the Ninth is not something for a pro per to handle, and obtaining advice from a skilled appellate lawyer is a good idea. If you simply cannot afford a lawyer, be aware that the Ninth has a series of guides and guidelines on its website that you should review. One of those is a compilation of various cases on the standard of review. http://www.ca9.uscourts.gov/content/view.php?pk_id=0000000368
