Is it possible to break my lease or not extend my lease (which was extended on 1 August 2015 for another year)?

My apartment as well as the building I live in (total of three flats and basements) was had an rodent problem for over three weeks and the landlord has not been able to satisfactorily, and the steps he has been taking are not making the situation better as we wake up to fresh mice poop very morning as well as coming back home to more poop in the afternoon. my lease was renewed on 1 august 2015 for a fourth year (i have not sign anything it was done over the phone), and I am wondering whether it is possible to break the lease, or to back out of extending the lease for another year?

I don't know how a lease renewal can be done over the phone? Consult an attorney as this is likely an oral month to month tenancy terminable upon 30 days prior written notice, or something you could just leave and not be subject to any liability. If the rodent problem is that severe, and you're in New Haven, contact Livable Cities Initiative to file a housing complaint 203-946-7090. If the landlord doesn't remedy the problem within a short period of time, you can start paying rent into court by bring a code enforcement complaint to get some leverage to terminate the lease early (to the extent a lease exists). But really, contact a lawyer.

I agree, it is not likely that you actually renewed the lease over the phone. So you have a choice, Either send written notice that you are not renewing and leave. Or I prefer, make a complaint to the Health Dept. as to the rodents, and then use LL failure to correct as your reason for leaving.
