I want to change my name after having been divorced, but I have also filed bankruptcy.

I was married for 30 years. My ex- abandoned me, got a divorce, and married another woman a month later. We have been divorced for a year. Prior to our divorce, we filed for bankruptcy which has been discharged. I want to change my last name, but not to my maiden name and I don't want to carry his name. I want to change my last name to my brother's last name. Can I do this, given I have filed bankruptcy in the past? There is no attempt to defraud as all debts were discharged. Thank you.

You should be able to change your name. The bankruptcy is discharged and closed. There is no concern.

There should be no issue in changing your last name. The fact that you filed bankruptcy should not impact that decision.
