16 is definitely not too young to start, a minor is a minor. Yes, you have the option and right to file a lawsuit with the court to have custody/visitation established, especially if there is currently nothing in writing, whether an agreement or current court order. As for whether you "need" an attorney, it will always be an attorney's suggestion that you should not represent yourself in any type of litigation, especially custody. But they can be very expensive, and also depends on further facts of your case as to whether an attorney would take it depending on what you are trying to pursue. Definitely get a consult and go from there. Good luck!

No, it is not necessary to hire an attorney, but it would be to your advantage to have one represent you in your custody/visitation action. Procedures and the law can be complicated and daunting, an attorney will help you wade through it and assist you in obtaining your goals. Find local counsel here on .
