Can I do volunteer work while my green card application is pending?

If you engage the services of a competent immigration attorney, in L.A you could obtain your "green card" within a matter of 4 months or less. Anyway, if you apply as the spouse of a US citizen, you can do any type of work, whether "volunteer" or not, since spouses of USCs are never penalized for "unauthorized employment".

Only if you have employment authorization in your hand as you are waiting.
