I'm a victim of identity theft. My attorney just recently got in touch with ombudsman and was directed to default resolution group. My taxes were taken for a loan that isn't mine in the first place. Its been a long grueling experience. What are my options

Either you just posted the same question with a few more facts or two people that are about 25 miles apart just happened to post the same question. This was my answer before: The Default Resolution Group (DFG) is a division of the US Department of Education. If you have a complaint about how a collection agency has been handling the collection of a student loan that you owe. You are supposed to be ale to call the DFG and the DFG is supposed to assign you to a Special Assistance Unit (SAU) to address your concerns. As I understand it, the DFG an SAU are supposed to operate like a mediator and help you and the collection agency resolve your dispute. If the DFG or SAU cannot resolve the issue, then you have the right to file suit against the company that is collecting the debt and received the funds from your tax refund. If a collection agency or 3rd party collector was the entity that was paid and you can prove that the debt is not yours, then the retention of the funds would be a violation of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, which is just one more grounds that you have to pursue the litigation.
