Lawyer to recover stolen goods and incomplete work from fraudulent contractor?

Business 4 views 2 answers
I'm in the midst of a VERY long dispute with a post-production artist who has not delivered the work he promised (months past the delivery deadline) nor has he attempted to return the drives with the footage after I fired him about 6 weeks ago. He's almost completely disappeared (apart from occasional flippant text messages after I text him frequently). I DID sign a contract but I'm not sure how it will hold in small claims court. I also recently relocated from LA to Austin. I have all the pertinent documents: contract, receipts, etc. I also have all the text messages and email from our correspondence as I've opted to communicate through him via writing so I have a record of our interactions, despite how infrequent they may be at this point. How can I get my property back?

Hire a reliable business lawyer where he is resides.. However, if he moves and cannot be located the efforts will not be successful. If he has a steady location where he lives, your chances of success increase. Any legal fees must justify your recovery for you to retain a lawyer. Best of luck

Depending on the amount in dispute, a local Justice of the Peace court may be the appropriate venue for resolving this matter. In Texas, the jurisdictional limits of JP courts is up to $10,000. I have provided a link to the Travis County JP Courts website where you will find useful information. In the event damages exceed or are likely to exceed $10,000, and you do not wish to handle this matter alone, I suggest you find a local business litigation attorney to consult. Good luck.
