My friend may have been given bad NC state tax advice from an out of state nonprofit organization. They live outside the US & has used the organization for several years to fill out their taxes. The 1st year they lived outside the US they asked the organization why they did not give them any NC tax forms to send in & they told my friend that since they do not live in the USA that they do not have to file NC state taxes but they have to keep on filling US federal taxes. So my friend thought that this organization knew what they are talking about. Now my friend has received a letter from NC for unpaid taxes for 1st year they lived outside the US. They contacted the organization & they supposedly sent a letter explaining why they dont owe any taxes but NC wants garnish their wages now. Help

Your friend will want to hire the assistance of an experienced North Carolina tax attorney to assist with this issue, whether resolving the debt that the state claims is owed, or setting up some sort of alternative payment arrangement. It is important that your friend seek the assistance of legal counsel as soon as possible, as letters from taxing authorities usually have tight deadlines.
