We have placement of our grandchild as a court order. The other grandparents have not seen him but a handful of times since.

We have helped raise him since birth, taking him every other weekend, purchasing things, etc.. We are anticipating some issues but would like to know what the options are if there comes to be any? If they go for any custody or visitation do we have to abide by anything or is it our say? The child was removed from the mother per the state of Wisconsin. There is nothing in the order stating that these grandparents are any part of this. Just want to have our ducks in a row so to speak if should anything come of it! Thank you

Under Wisconsin law, grandparents can petition the court to establish a visitation schedule, if the court finds that having such visitation would be in the minor child's best interest. This is the so called "grandparent's statute." The court also has to consider the wishes of the parents, as there is a leading United States Supreme Court case on this issue, Troxel v. Granville; the case basically stands for the rule that before the state can intervene and force visitation over the parent's objections, the state has to have special cause and reason to override the wishes of the parents.

I am not clear what type of "placement" you have. If you have guardianship, you would not be required to provide contact with other grandparents. If you have only "visitation" that is sometimes provided to grandparents, you would not likely have much authority to make that decision. The parents likely retain that authority. I suggest that you consult with a child custody lawyer about your specific order and rights.
