Do I have any options after being turned down from a job based on my credit score?

I have been working in the financial services industry for over 5 years and decided to take another job, yet the employer is now saying that they will not hire me based of info on the consumer report such as bad credit history. I do not believe that has anything to do with what my position would be, since it does not involve paying bills.

Unfortunately at this time I am not aware of any laws that would protect you from being turned down from a job based on your credit score. There is a proposal (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/elizabeth-warren-credit-checks_55f82335e4b09ecde1d9a3eb?ncid=fcbklnkushpmg00000013&section=politics) by Elizabeth Warren that would help you but that would likely be years before being considered. You're best bet at this point would be to meet with someone who can help you settle the derogatory marks on your credit and start to build new credit lines. Best of luck. Chad

Employers have a wealth of qualified applicants to chose from - when I post a job listing, I receive at least 100 responses with 48 hours. Unless the reason for refusing to hire you is illegal, you will be out of luck. Illegal discrimination is illegal because it involves judging people for something they can't or shouldn't have to change, such as race, gender, religion. You can change your credit score if you make the effort to do so. I published a free 10 part series on this topic here on avvo. Hope this perspective helps.

If I were you I would ask the prospective employer if there was anything specific that was holding you back, and if they would reconsider your employment if you had it fixed. If they give you an answer begin working on that.
