My OPT started on July-2015. I am currently working as Intern Programmer Analyst which is Unpaid. I will be on Payroll from next month. Is it necessary to be on payroll while on OPT? Does it affect my further OPT extension (If there is any!!) or H1B application. My university said its fine but wanted to confirm from legal aspects. Please help.

To the best of my knowledge, and I could be wrong, there isn't a "remuneration requirement' attached to OPT. It is after all, "practical training" in the same field as your studies, and it can be paid or unpaid, your choice, as long as you get the proper "hands on" practical training on the academic discipline you graduated in.

There is no remuneration requirement attached to OPT. You can work as a paid or unpaid intern as long as you work in the area related to your study program.

No, you do not need to be on payroll to maintain your OPT status.
