Service of a petition for dissolution is not enough. Much more must be done to finalize a divorce. If this is all you did, you are not divorced. So you will have to start over, and yes, there will be a 6 month wait.
Your case has probably been dismissed and you will have to file again and divorce status cannot be entered for 6 months from filing the Petition even if you file for a Bification.
The 6 months waiting period refers to the rule that judgment of dissolution cannot be entered until at least 6 months from the date the petition for dissolution was served on the responding party. According to the limited facts you provided, you filed a petition for dissolution and served it on your spouse. Simply filing a petition for dissolution and serving it does not result in you getting a divorce. Since you filed over 20 years ago, I think it is safe to assume that your case was dismissed long ago for failure to prosecute. In that case, you are still married to your former spouse. You are not divorced. If your case was dismissed, you will need to re-file, re-serve, and take all other required steps to get your case to judgment. If you once again do not take those steps, you once again, will not be divorced and the issue of the 6 months will be moot. http://www.courts.ca.gov/documents/fl107info.pdf
