Accused of identity theft. Help!

In 2013 I was in a relationship with a woman. As the relationship was ending I made the mistake of taking her social security number and driver's license number and used them to run her credit to see where she moved (just curious I didn't stalk her). Second mistake was that I did it at the company I work for. Well she recently found out what I did and my employer traced it back to me. She filed a police report and now I understand that I may be faced with a felony charge. Is this true? How can I get out of this? I've never been arrested in my life and admit that I made a big mistake.

Talk with a criminal defense lawyer, there, now. Do not discuss this with police or your employer before talking with that lawyer.

You need to retain a criminal defense lawyer. Learning lesson here is that no one gives a flip about people saying "my bad" or "I'm sorry" after they get caught doing something wrong and expect that just saying those words equates to accepting responsibility for ones conduct. Your poor decision making may cost you your job, money out of your pocket and a criminal problem, so its important that you take from this that better decision making and proper conduct is what avoids problems not apologies and crocodile tears, the system cuts through those like a hot knife though butter.
