How can someone protect themselves in a divorce? What "tricks" and tactics should one be made aware of? Do's and dont's?

My dad is being served divorce papers from his wife of seven years. His second marriage, her third. They recently moved to Texas just over a year ago. She sent an email to him a week ago stating she was moving out and wanted to get a few things from the house. She requested he not be present for this from ten a.m. until five p.m. the following day. He got a hotel and did as requested. He transferred perhaps five hundred dollars to her for "food" during this weekend, at her request. They both have their own incomes. He only had bank accounts in both their names. She had her own private account. She cleaned out the majority of what she considered her property and several large items that were both of theirs. Now, she is trying to take him for half of everything including his social security and retirement. She already has an attorney. He is trying to find one. Is there any advice I can assist him with in locating an attorney and what, if anything, can he do to protect himself from getting absolutely taken advantage of? Please help!!

That is what people go to law school, and practice law for years to learn. He needs to hire an attorney. Plenty of attorneys practice in Dallas, myself included.

My best advise is to find an attorney as soon as possible to assess the situation. Texas is a community property state meaning that anything accrued during the marriage is equally owned by the parties. You will need an attorney in the county where the case is filed.

Although there are never (and can never be) any guarantees in litigation, the best "protection" is to be represented by competent counsel. There are many competent attorneys in your area who have posted a profile here on and who would welcome the opportunity to assist you. However, you must reach out to them (contact info available on each attorney’s profile) as attorneys are not allowed to directly solicit your business. All the best!
