Can I get my license to sell life insurance with a misdemeanor in theft?

I've just paid to start studying for my license to sell life insurance and have my exam in two weeks. In my past I have a record: a misdemeanor in theft (under 250$). Am I wasting my time and money trying to get this license or can I still get one? - State of MI

You need to check with the State licensing board. Some state licenses have specific requirements regarding you past history or character and fitness. It may be something that you have to disclose but may not necessarily disqualify you. Michigans LARA website usually has helpful information or call the licensing section and ask them if you will meet the requirements. You maybe want to have the details of your conviction handy...when? Where? What was the charge? You may want to pay the $10 and download a background check on yourself through the Michigan State Police iChat so you have all the accurate information. Good luck to you!

You should contact the licensing board to see if a prior theft conviction will bar you. If it will, you can try to see if your state allows for expungement. If it does not then you might have wasted your time and money.

I agree that you should contact whoever is in charge of licensing for that profession to see how that conviction will effect your eligibility. Lawyers will not be able to answer that question for you. You should also inquire as to whether or not you can get the conviction expunged. Many criminal defense attorneys offer free consultations so take advantage. Good luck in your future endeavor.
