I was cited for 484a/488 Petty Theft, what should I do? How will it affect my ability to get into Pharm school/obtain jobs?

I got caught for stealing something from Sears that is less than $50. I was wondering how I should plea in court (I can't afford a lawyer right now, and don't want to get my parents involved). What should I expect? How much should I expect the civil demand to be and Will I have to pay the Civil Demand sent to me by Sears? I believe that I will be able to get this misdemeanor charge expunged after a year, but before that, how will it affect my ability to obtain a job as a pharmacy technician or my chances of getting into Pharmacy Graduate school?

Situations like yours can have a big impact on jobs, licensing, etc., even if there is an expungement a year or so later. An expungement does not wipe out the record, and the conviction must still be revealed in several instances. Do not speak to Sears, or pay the amount they will demand in a letter. Do not just go to court and plead guilty. Before even considering either of those two moves, get a lawyer, and fast. There are lots of effective defenses to shoplifting charges. If you cannot afford to hire a private lawyer (many will provide a free consultation in any event) there are many fine public defenders. Be sure to go to court as ordered.
