Can something legally be done about this?

I recently started trying out dating websites. There's a particular site which is full of scammers. This site is so bad that I looked into it with consumer affairs and there is a list of complaints about this site from people all over the country about how they have been lied to and scammed.

You raise an interesting legal question and that is, does a dating site have an obligation to take reasonable steps to screen out scammers. This is an open question right now, so besides canceling your subscription or being a lead plaintiff in a class action suit, there isnt much you can do.

So, you are finding people lie in social media? I doubt you can gain much traction in a law suit. The web site has a safe harbor under CDA Section 230 unless you can prove they are somehow involved with the scammers. I suggest you move on to a better run dating site. There are many well known legitimate sites to choose from.

More than likely the site will be seen as an Internet service provider instead of an Internet content provider, the former having much less responsibility over what is posted and the information provided on the site, including information from scammers. However, if alerted, the site has an obligation to resolve any issues such as copyright infringement. I suggest you log a complaint with the site and document yourself to create a paper trail. You may just want to find a more reliable site after doing so and hopefully they clean their act for the next person or for when you decide to come back.
