How is a family lawyer different from a lawyer that handles divorce, child custody, and child support?

Is it just a broader category of those 3 things?

One and the same. Now there are some attorneys that only handle one aspect of family law, i.e. divorce, child custody, support but for the most part a family law attorney handles all those areas.

There is no difference between a family lawyer and a lawyer that handles divorce, child custody, and child support.

I agree with most of the answers. I also get asked, as a "family lawyer" whether I handle estate planning (wills, trusts) as well as dependency proceedings. A lawyer that specifically handles divorce, and all aspects of divorce (e.g., child custody and child support), may not also handle "family" matters such as wills and trusts. Hope that helps!
