Can we just change the locks on our doors and tell them that they no long can live here with out giving them another warning?

My pregnant niece and her husband moved in with my husband and I in Oct. of 2015. They are not on our rental agreement nor have they paid any rent to us or our landlord. We have asked them to leave 2 times but they refuse. Neither of them work and are claiming they are homeless to the State of Michigan. They refuse to help around the house and act as if this is a hotel where they can come and go as they please. I am disabled but my husband works 10 shifts 5 days a week plus is on call 24/7. Can we just (with our landlord permission) change the locks on our doors and tell them that they no long can live here with out any more warnings? we have asked for our house keys back but they refuse to give them back.

You should talk to an attorney to determine if you need to have them officially evicted. It sounds like that may be the case here, but details are important. Good Luck, ~Katie

Be cautious of engaging in these type of "self help" actions. This is a bit more complicated than you think so you should at lease bounce this off a local attorney.
