Being immature as a young adult I racked up $15k in credit card debt to Amex. My bill was about $300 a month which I could pay, but then I lost my job. Amex was awarded a judgement against me where I live in Tennessee of $18k( differences being late payments and fines before judgement). I am now working, so I made a deal with AMEX payment collectors and struggle. I missed Nov & Dec, I went to pay Nov, Dec, and Jan payments today only to find they Garnished my bank account for $15k. I have been on the phone with them trying to get it sorted out and get my account released( it has my wifes money in there also). I am looking for any constructive advice how to fix.

Realistically, there is little that you can do. If they have a legal judgment they have access to your money. You may call a local lawyer for some settlement. Good luck

I agree with Mr. Starke - the judgement essentially allows them to your money in satisfaction of the judgment. It would be worth at least reaching out and talking to an attorney who handles debtor rights as there may be something that can be done with respect to your wife's money. Use the find a lawyer feature of this site and schedule a consultation.

You can possibly get some of it back in a bankruptcy depending on when the levy took place. You may have other rights if you were not served a copy of the levy. However, once you miss an agreed payment they are free to take legal action. I suggest you talk to a bankruptcy/consumer rights attorney asap
