My Question is, what are the chances of me actually being imprisoned? I am hoping for just a fine. Thoughts?

I got arrested the other day for petty theft which is a Class A Misdemeanor in New Hampshire, I am a Massachusetts citizen. This is my first offense and I stole less than $50 worth of items. The New Hampshire state law states that "Theft constitutes a class A misdemeanor in New Hampshire if the value of the property or services stolen does not exceed $1,000. and In New Hampshire, a class A misdemeanor is punishable by up to one year of imprisonment and a fine of no more than $2,000. "
My thoughts are that your odds at a favorable outcome will exponentially increase with the assistance of a skilled and experienced NH criminal defense lawyer.
You may or may not enjoy viable defenses to the charges, affirmative or otherwise, or there may be factual, legal, procedural or substantive mechanisms by which to attack and beat the charges in your unique case, I do not know and the forum to find out is NOT on line; rather it is in the sanctity of attorney's offices, where your statements are privileged and cannot be used against you.
The best way for you to get competent advise is going to be to consult with an experienced and local criminal defense lawyer who can follow-up on your information with questions of her/his own, as well as review the police reports and whatever evidence that you may provide and then offer an informed opinion.
My advise: GET OFFLINE (caps intentional) and into a skilled and experienced New Hampshire criminal defense lawyer's office. Use the "Find a Lawyer" feature on to locate proximate lawyers, make an appointment, show up on time, bring whatever evidence, documents or witnesses that you may have, engage in a meaningful face-to-face consultation and get yourself some advise which is legally sound and has been custom tailored as possible to meet your specific reasonable needs in your unique case.
I hope that I have been helpful in answering your question.
The lawyers who are telling you to get a NH lawyer are 100% correct. NH is very different from MA and the NH courts are much stricter with these offenses than are the MA courts. Get a good criminal lawyer who is licensed in NH and who practices in the Court where your case is.
I have practiced criminal defense in New Hampshire for 7 years. The penalties in New Hampshire tend to be harsher than the penalties in Massachusetts and vary greatly from town to town. A lawyer with experience handling criminal cases in the town in which you were arrested will be familiar with your prosecuting agency and can provide you with the best answer to your concern.
