You have to find out the answer to that question. You should start by contacting both the State of North Carolina Vital Statistics or similar agency as well as the County where your wife lived. The county would have a record of divorces during the time period you are dealing with and can tell you. You can also hire a private investigator in North Carolina to look into this, perhaps talking to your wife and getting more details. The same thing could be said about your current girlfriend if she interested.

You'll want to contact the department of vital statistics/records in the state or states where you believe the divorce would have been entered.

The simplest thing would be to ask your wife or ex-wife if she did obtain a judgment of divorce from you, and if so ask her for a copy of it. Otherwise you would need to contact the state vital statistics records as the previous two attorneys suggested.
