Colorado is one of 45 states that participate in the Driver’s License Compact. The Driver’s License Compact is an agreement between states to report court convictions and administrative suspensions to the driver’s home state. A DUI or DWAI conviction in Califirnia will likely have consequences to a person'a ability to get a driver's license in Colorado uless the person is reinstated in California. Under the Driver’s License Compact, the home state of the driver is required to take action against a driver’s license as if the offense occurred in the driver’s home state. Therefore, it is difficult to avoid a driver’s license revocation if convicted for an alcohol related driving offense in another state. To see what steps you need to take in Colorado, contact the Department of Revenue at 303-205-5613. Jay Tiftickjian

You may qualify for a license in Colorado if you have complied with the CA Court requirements and it has been one year since you last drove.

Thew question really depends on whether you fully complied with the sentence conditions imposed by the California court when you werer convicted 3 years ago. If you did the CO attorneys advice is correct.

If you have a valid CA driver's license, take it to the CO DMV. If not, you need to get a valid CA DL (clear up schools or fines or SR22) before you get a CO DL. If you have not completed all the requirements, CA DMV may lift the suspension if you file a declaration (form online at www.dmv.ca.gov) that you are moving and don't intend to return. Edward J. Blum
