I need to file bankruptcy, but I do not qualify for legal aid. I have no money to pay a lawyer, and I have no idea where to even start. Do you have any suggestions?

If you don't qualify for legal aid, then by definition, you have enough money to afford a lawyer. There is a bankruptcy lawyer for every budget and most lawyers will take some sort of payment plan. We understand that you have limited means, but that doesn't mean you have no means. People who say they cannot afford a lawyer are actually just making a choice to not afford one, to not make an effort to figure out how to afford one.

State laws called exemptions typically protect people of limited means from creditors, so I suspect if you truly cannot afford a bankruptcy lawyer, you do not NEED to time bankruptcy because your wages are being garnished or your home is being foreclosed, but you want bankruptcy to stop payment demands from collectors. Wanting & needing are different things. Also, you should understand that bankruptcy is not a program designed to help the poverty stricken, but is a one shot program designed to help the middle income person escape from overwhelming debt. List most bargains, it comes with a price much higher than the cost of paying a lawyer. Hope this perspective helps.
