What is the likely penalty for 1st traffic ticket on an intermediate license?

My daughter is 16 and has an intermediate license. She was in a fender bender and received a ticket for failure to yield on a left turn. No damage to our car, a dent in the side of the other car. The Iowa driver's manual says for a first traffic offense you "may" have your license suspended or be subject to restrictions. Is she likely to have her license suspended, and for how long? What are the possible restrictions?

There are two parts to the answer to this question. When she appears before the magistrate on the traffic violation if she is guilty I would expect a fine of $100 plus costs and surcharges. If she sets the case for trial it will give her a chance to try and negotiate with the prosecutor to see if she can get a deferred prosecution (not a deferred judgment) and keep from having a conviction at all. If a conviction is entered and sent to Iowa DOT then part two of the answer kicks in. There are potential consequences for any moving violation for the holder of an intermediate license. If she receives a notice from the DOT you will probably want to consult with an attorney in order to understand and exercise her rights to a hearing and to find out what alternatives are available to a suspension of her license.
