How do I find out whether or not my residence was properly inspected electrically and up to code?

The house that i am renting is having issues. Electrical issues. Things are wired wrong, outlets short out, light bulbs burn out in 2 days, my garage lights are attached to my neighbors breaker box and vise versa, etc. etc.......etc. I'm under the impression that this place has not been properly inspected and certified by the powers that be in that department. How do i verify my suspicions? is there a sticker or a certification slip on file somewhere that would indicate for certain whether or not my residence.......with my 10 year old son sleeping inside......has been certified to not spontaneously burst into flame?

The Department of Labor and Industries conducts electrical inspection. You can look up inspection history here: http://www.lni.wa.gov/TradesLicensing/Electrical/FeePermInsp/LookupPermInspect/default.asp

If the L&I lookup that the previous poster linked to doesn't provide the answers you are looking for then you may want to check with code enforcement for the city that you live in.
