Does it make sense for me to hire a lawyer or should I just plea guilty?

I was arrested for a dui in Vermont, this is my first offense. From my understanding, Vermont does not have a work permitted or hardship license. Is it even worth it for me to fight for it. I'm not contesting that I was speeding or over the limit, I just want to be able to drive to work. Like I said this is my first dui and I don't know the process, I'm willing to pay any fines I have to but I don't want to receive jail time. I'm just feeling so overwhelmed.

In response to your question and with my personal inclination, I would highly reccommend that you hire a Criminal Defense Attorney who specializes in Driving Under the Influence. Though the law in NJ (where I practice) and VT (where you are charged) may differ, An experienced attorney will, in general, (1) Be able to increase your leverage and negotiation position with the prosecutor, (2) challenge the arrest and charge as to the intricacies and minute details that may be in your favor, (3) work out a settlement or plea deal which may allow for your to get a more lenient sentence, (4) bring your case to trial to challenge the arrest and charge in total, or (5) give you clarity as to a work permit or hardship license under VT law. Good luck with your situation.

It does not make sense to plead guilty without first consulting a lawyer and having the lawyer review the case. A DUI conviction makes you subject to many other consequences besides jail, fines and a suspension, including increased insurance, job problems, credit report issues, foreign travel limitations, inability to rent a car for several years and other problems. Hire a VT DUI lawyer.

Easy answer. Get a lawyer. You may not understand the consequences and usually DUI lawyers are inexpensive.
