What is the statute of limitation to sue an ex employer for defamation in Utah?

I was a resident manger for a rental property and often clashed with the person overseeing my job for the owners. The property was sold with no notice to me. Then the "supervisor" told the new owner as well as the residents at a community meeting that I'd embezzled funds. (not true)As well as other false accusations, The new owner believed it, fired me and forced me out in 3 days impounded my truck and I never recieved my last check. He then had me tresspassed from the property before I could retrieve my belongings. I lost everything in my home and still am struggling to rebuild my life. It's been 3 yrs. I've wanted to sue but the situation I was put in has made it impossible to pay an attorney.

My understanding is that defamation has only a one year statute of limitations in Utah. You might want to contact a local employment lawyer to look into a wrongful termination claim, unpaid wages claim, etc. Good luck.

In Utah, the statute of limitations for defamation is one year. The statute of limitations on a claim for wrongful termination in violation of a statue is three years; the statute a limitations for a common law wrongful termination claim (most likely) is four years. You should consider speaking with any attorney about the issues at your former place of employment.

You need to go to your local law library in Utah & research the issue or you could find the info on the internet. In the alternative, you should check /w an experienced civil attorney in your area to find out what the applicable statute of limitations is for defamation.
