My estranged husband is spreading infuriating lies about me.

My estranged husband is a liar and has been lying about me to friends that I called the cops and lied against him. He had abused me and I called the cops and gave a statement, DV charges were pressed and he signed and SOC and promised to go through a batterers program. I find the lies infuriating because he keeps doing this and pretending that I set him up with the police. Meanwhile he threatened to beat me right after I had a baby. Can I sue him for libel and can I win?

Proving a case of liable / slander can be difficult, especially proving that you were damaged by the statements. If you feel that you have been damaged you should contact a competent attorney in WA.

If you wish to sue for libel - - the cause of action would be defamation. You have to prove you have been damaged by the lies. That may be difficult. A domestic violence perpetrator will attempt to continue to exercise power and control over you. Perhaps it can be done by misleading your friends. If he entered into a stipulation on contract there are certain terms he is obligated to follow. You should review those conditions and make sure he is not breaking the conditions. If he is breaking the conditions you could report it to the police and they might move to revoke the SOC. Collateral evidence may play a big role in whether the prosecutor takes such action. If he knows he can get to you - he will. You may wish to look into resources at the local YWCA. They typically have domestic violence advocates that are trained to work with victims and assist when possible. Good luck in your diffcult sitaution.
