Can my parents kick me out without notice?
Anonymous2 views2 answers
I am a 20 year old college student who commutes to school from home. I work as well as go to school but do not pay rent. I have broken no laws. My father has threatened to kick me out if he catches me using a computer I purchased with my own money. Does he have to give me notice or a certain amount of time to find a new residence or can he just kick me out on the spot ? Additionally what would be considered my property in this case? Would clothes purchased for me by my parents be considered mine ?
You are in a tough position, but I agree with Atty. Owens. Short of working it out with your parents, you need to consider moving out for your own well-being and ability to focus on work and school.
If you do not pay rent or contribute to household expenses in any way, you are not a tenant, you are a guest. Parents have no obligation to provide support to adult children. As a result, they can kick you out with no notice. As soon as permission for a guest to stay is terminated they must leave. Anything given to you at any time by your parents, clothes, furniture, etc. is a gift and is your to keep.
