Will I lose my citizenship?

Business 4 views 3 answers
I dated my current partner for 5 years and we got married 3 years ago, we filed for a green card and it was granted to me the following so I've been married for 3 years and I've been a legal resident for 2 years, I proceeded to pursue a medical career in the military, which expedited my citizenship status so I am a citizen of the United States at this time through military service and I guess indirectly through marriage since I couldn't join the military until I obtained my green card. Problematic part: I recently found out that my partner had been cheating on me and we are on the verge of divorce now. If we proceed with the divorce before the 5 year "probation period" would I loose my citizen status even though it was obtained through military service. I appreciate your counseling.

No. Contact a US immigration attorney for review & clarification but divorce does not reverse the grant of citizenship unless there was fraud that USICE can prove. A broken marriage does not equal fraud.

No, there is no citizenship "probation period," a breakdown in a valid marriage does not end citizenship or permanent resident status. Good luck!

There is no 5 year probation period. To be denaturalized, the government would need to show that you commited some kind of fraud or that you were ineligible for some reason from the beginning.
