My divorce lawyer has padded the invoice, cancelled sessions, and emptied my savings. How can I proceed with a new attorney?

It would seem as though my attorney has been interested in creating a mechanism to transfer wealth from my sparse savings into hers, rather than pursue my case. She has cancelled mediation dates, generated thousands of dollars in administrative actions by listing conversations with her staff and between staff members, with no direct impact on my case. Now, I still do not have a mediation date, nor money to proceed and hire a new attorney and bring him/her up to speed. Do I have any options other than facing an attorney in court by myself to fight for custody of my children?

One option would be is to have a face to face meeting with her and explain to her what you have just written here in this forum. Then hopefully you both could come to a clearer understanding of how you feel and how she is billing you. It is worth the effort of one more try. Another option would be to contact Legal Aid in your county, sometimes they have funding for cases such as yours. Another option would be to contact you Local County Bar Association and see if they could give you a referral for “pro bono” work. Another option would be to come up the money to hire another lawyer. Litigation costs for a custody battle can be very expensive. Best of Luck. PLEASE NOTE: THESE COMMENTS ARE NOT LEGAL ADVICE. It sounds like you need to have a conversation that is long overdue. How much money has been spent? Was it unreasonable? if you feel you have been treated unfairly, you should raise it first with the lawyer, and if that does not get you satisfaction, with the State bar.
