My husband's Alien Registration Number is different on I485 receipt.

I recently filed I-485, I131 and I765 forms for myself and my husabnd. My Alien Registration Number (A#) in I485 receipt is same as that of my I140 approval. Further, the same A# is mentioned on the receipts of I131 and I765. My problem is as follows: My husband was issued an A# three/four years ago when he applied for EAD (as a J2 status holder). The same A# was mentioned subsequently on his H1B approval also. But, in his I485 receipt, the A# is different. Further, in his I131 and I765 receipts, the A# is not mentioned at all. I had heard that A# should always be same. Should I get in touch with USCIS to get his A# changed to his earlier number or is this usual for derivatives to get a new A# at the time of I485 filing (obviously many dependents do not have any A# before filing of I485)?

Usually the last A number controls. I will recommend talking to an immigration lawyer to explain. Generally the last A number would control. It is to your advantage to consult with an immigration attorney for further explanation. Additionally you should let immigration know about the previous A number and ask for consolidation of the files to avoid any fraud inference. You are welcome to use the link provided below. Goodluck.

Do not worry. The A# on a student or J1 based EAD is always different than one based on a residence case and usually starts with the digit '1'. However, if the A# on the I140 petition and the I485 is different, you just want to make sure you reference both numbers on your correspondence with the USCIS. You need to do this so that they consolidate your files. Eventually, you will only have one A# and that one will be the one llisted on your Alien Registration Card (aka "Green Card"). As immigration attorneys we are accustomed to handling these glitches in the bureaucracy and if caught early, will not create any delay in the ultimate approval of the adjustment of status.
