How do I protect my assets?

Business 5 views 5 answers
I currently live in another state. I was involved in a very very minor car accident back in February with a city bus and it was deemed my fault. Then in June I was in another car accident that was deemed the other person's fault so I ended up filing a suit against the insurance and received my check this week for it. My insurance (from Februarys accident) doesn't want to pay the lawyers due to the fact that the accident only caused a minor dent in my passenger door. So now I was served court papers last week for being sued. How do I protect my settlement check from this since I just received it?

You cannot legally hide your assets from creditors to defraud or avoid responsibility. But you can use the funds or make purchases or deposit in some trusts that may be exempt from garnishments.

If you had insurance, then they will "pay" their lawyers to defend you. You always protect assets by having proper coverage in effect.

You have insurance, use it. Turn the suit papers over to your carrier and demand that they file a response to the suit.

if you have automobile coverage your insurance carrier has a duty to defend you. I would recomend you forward the lawsuit you were served with to your Carrier and they will provide you with a defense.
