My husband and I are green card holders. We lived in San Francisco from 2006-2016 We have 2 children who are American Citizens (they are 5 and 4) We came back to the UK in April 2016 due to a family matter. We have since sold our house we owned in UK that we and plan to return to US and get our citizenship (we are able as we had green cards for over 5 years). We want to ensure we can return before April 2017 without problems to the Portland area

You shouldn't have a problem re-entering the country, but you should seek the advice of an immigration lawyer before applying for citizenship to ensure that you include sufficient documentation establishing that there was no intention to abandon your permanent resident status.

You should have no problem entering the USA. Carry documentation of your residence. Unless you have maintained a residence inside the USA while you were in the UK you may not be currently eligible to apply for Naturalization. The USCIS publishes a Guide to Naturalization found on their website. The guide has a chart for helping you determine when you are eligible to apply for Naturalization.
