Botched 3 day back surgery turned into a NITEMARE!! Went in for back surgery where they cut the illic artery in my leg, blead out had to have so many bags of blood to count, they put in what was called the cage to replace the 3 disk they took out, they closed me up then, and went back in a week later to put in 9 screws and all to hold the cage in, spent a month in the hospital, then went to rehab to learn to walk again, where they lost me one nite, couldn't wake me,by the time my husband got there, rescue had been called and I was revived, and taken to the hospital, got out and when I saw the surgeon I told him my right leg kept swelling up and could it be a blood clot, he said no, that he wouldn't be able to touch my leg if had a blood clot, well it kept swelling so I went to a vascular surgeon where he found several blood clots, was put back in the hospital on heparin and warfarin, when I got out they put me on xarelto for 6 months, well I saw the surgeon again and told him I was hurting in the back, he did X-rays and saw a spot in my psoas muscle, said he wasn't worried about it, well it grew into an abess, that my family doctor found, bad abess, the can't id what it is,had a drain tu

I would recommend you gather your medical records and consult with a medical malpractice attorney. You don't state when this happened. There is a two year statute of limitations for medical malpractice claims in Florida. Good luck.

The records and imaging studies would have to be reviewed by an expert to discern if there were departures from accepted standards of care (lacerating the iliac artery sure sounds like one) that in turn caused significant injuries. The blood clot and infection/abscess may be normal complications or they may not have been handled correctly. Local counsel can help arrange for an expert review if they believe damages warrant same.

Sorry to hear about your nightmare surrounding the back surgery. The first question is when did this happen? The statute of limitations in Florida for medical malpractice cases is generally 2 years from the date of the incident. It certainly sounds like your healthcare providers were negligent, but in order to know for sure, you need to immediately get a consultation with an experienced medical malpractice trial attorney who can get from you all the details, as well as the medical records. Then, the next step would be to have an expert surgeon in the same specialty your surgeon review the medical records to determine if there are reasonable grounds to believe medical malpractice was committed. If so, then your case can proceed, assuming the statute of limitations has not passed. The main this right now is the get an appointment with a experienced medical malpractice trial attorney to further discuss your potential medical malpractice case.

Your situation needs to be reviewed by a medical expert. You should obtain needed medical care and treatment immediately and follow the doctor's advice. Do not give any statements to the adverse party or insurance company nor grant them access to any medical records. Photograph the injuries and the damage done to any property. Contact a personal injury attorney in your area as soon as possible so that you can protect your rights.
