If my the father to my son is trying to get custody of my son what do i do? What rights does he have to see my son?

My son is now 7 months and all of a sudden his dad wants to step in and say wait till they serve me with papers. Hes in no position to take care of a baby he has sevear biopolar he would beat me up when i was pregnant hes on drugs and should have no rights to my son. He didnt even sighn the birthcertificate. Please help me get information.
