Can I record my loud neighbors outside while in my room, as proof that they are disturbing my sleep? I live in Virginia

My neighbors keep breaking the quit time hours where we live, by yelling and carrying on in the backyard where my bedroom window is. I called the cops and of course they went back in before the cops came. I was wondering is it legal for me to record them being loud? My shades are closed can't hear conversation, but you can hear the yelling and laughing. I can hear them on my Livingroom. Can I record that as proof it's coming through to my side of the house?

Yes, you can record the loud noise or video the event to show your location of where you are and where the noise is coming from. This will demonstrate how far the noise is traveling to the police and Judge.

You should be able to use the recording as proof of the loud noise. You might not be able to use it as proof of the content of the conversation, but that shouldn't matter in your case.

I agree with the previous answers and you can get a decibel meter or use an app that records levels, date and time as evidence. Whether or not the sound actually violates the noise ordinance or other rules is a different matter.
