Being Sued for Debts already paid

About 4 yrs ago, I went through a divorce and in the divorce settlement, I had to take all the credit card debt (aprox 14K). Every acct went to collections, however by September of 06 I had every last one of them paid off. It took a little over two years, but I went on payment programs and "settled" with the creditors on the others. My goal was to avoid bankrupcy and get them paid so that I could have a secure financial future. Well, I just got sued by one of the collections agencies for an accout that has already been paid. I have recieved a notice in the mail stating that I owe this xyz company the amount that I have already paid to another company for the exact same debt. What do I do? When I went through each account, I noticed that some of them were paid by me in full twice and i am STILL recieving calls and threats of garnishments. I dont know what to do next...I thought I was doing the right thing by paying them off and now I am wondering if it wouldnt have been better if I would have just filed for bankruptcy? Can you help?
