Do I need legal representation in court for first offense shoplifting?

Business 7 views 4 answers
This is my first offense. I shoplifted $30.45 at TJ Maxx in Farmington. My court date is 5/24 in Hartford at 9:30. Aside from being ashamed and terrified, I don't know what to do or expect. Should I ask for a public defender? Is this misdemeanor on my record forever? I'm 64 and have never been in trouble before. What I did has no rational explanation. I have been unable to sleep and literally sick over this since it happened on Tuesday.

No attorney is needed. You will be appearing in community court which assigns defendants community service to perform in lieu of being prosecuted.

Atty Spinella is correct. When you get to the community court the Marshall will pull your file and the prosecutor will speak to you. You'll have to do some community labor for a couple of days and if you do so , 30 days following completion your charge will be dismissed

You don't need to hire an attorney, but I would advise you do so. Having a theft conviction on your record is not something you want

If you attend court on your own, be sure you understand everything your are told. You don't want to miss your community service or any follow up court appearances.
