Will I be responsible for my husband's car loan, student loan, or credit card debt after we get divorced?

I live in Washington State. I have been married for 4 years. My husband just told me he wants a divorce. He has a car loan in his name only, and only he drives that car ( I have my own car and car loan in my name only); he also has some credit cards in his name only (and has only used them for his own personal wants), and has 2 student loans (one for his bachelor's degree he completed in 2016 and one for his master's degree that he is currently in the middle of). Will I be responsible for paying half or a portion of these debts that are in his name? If I'm not and he doesn't pay them will I become responsible for them? Can creditors or collection agencies come after me for these debts if he doesn't pay them or moves out of the country to avoid paying them?

Any debt acquired during the marriage is a community debt. By that same token, any property acquired during the marriage, with some exceptions is community property. Creditors are not required to honor dissolution decrees. What you need to do is consult with a family law lawyer. Generally, if he is ordered to pay the debts, you can have him hold you harmless, meaning going after him for reimbursement, if the creditors come after you. If he has a lot of debt, one thing you could do is file bankruptcy, but you must do so before a final decree or property settlement is entered into.

I agree with the previous answer. The creditors will assume you both owe the money and collect from the easiest party. So if you are contacted by a creditor you can help them ( by giving employment, banking and background information on collateral locations) so they can collect from him, without giving your information and they may collect from him instead. But get a lawyer now for the dissolution.
