I owed state unemployment of $6000.00. Can the state take my social security check if it is automatically put in a direct deposit account? I do not owe them this much it should accually add up to approx. $2400.00 that I owe them.

Generally speaking debts to unemployment are non dischargeable in a chapter 7. Yes, it would be a good idea to deal with unemployment through an attorney who obtained an itemized statement of all of the amounts that it is claimed that you owe, and then reviewed each. Actual legal advice can only be provided in an office consultation by an attorney licensed in your jurisdiction, with experience in the area of law in which your concern lies.

Ask for an itemized statement from the unemployment office and question the amount. Make sure that you do everything in writing. If you disagree with their information, provide proof that it is wrong. If this does not resolve the problem, then you might consider talking to an attorney. Until you try to address it yourself, it is not worth paying an attorney at this early stage.
