Unless you have lease you have a month to month lease. Therefore if you have paid your rent your landlord must give you 30 days notice IN WRITING. If he kicks your door in you can call the police and sue him for illegal self help eviction. Keep good records of your payments and conversations. The above said, an illegal eviction action will only allow you to keep possession for 90 days or so if he then follows the correct procedure.

Your landlord cannot legally remove you or lock you out of your apartment without a court order. Which means, he must provide you written notice terminating your lease, the written notice must provide you a minimum of 30 days to vacate, and if you fail to vacate, your landlord must file a lawsuit against you to evict you. Your landlord cannot evict you unless he receives a court order evicting you. Any attempt to physically remove you without a court order is illegal, and call the police immediately.
