Is it illegal to consult with more than one bankruptcy attorney?

No, you are free to speak with as many bankruptcy lawyers as you wish. You would generally only hire one attorney to represent you if you go forward with a bankruptcy filing. Check around and pick an attorney you feel comfortable with. Hope it works out. Good luck!

It is not only legal, it is a smart thing to do. Getting a second (or third or more) opinion can give you peace of mind that you chose the right attorney for you.

It seems to me that about half the people who consult me have already spoken with at least one other bankruptcy lawyer. In fact, I have several cases where my client started with one of the larger factory type firms and got creeped out by how impersonal the treatment was. Once some other lawyer has filed the case, I am very reluctant to get involved; but prior to filing I certainly don't mind accepting the case most of the time. Having said that, however, I should mention something else. If someone has been to several other lawyers before they come to see me, I consider that a bad sign. I think it usually means that the other lawyers have advised something that this person doesn't like. And I wonder if by the time they get to me, they have decided to conceal the part of the story that was creating the negative result.
