How can we find out if we are recognized by the IRS as a 501 c 7?

We are the Newcomer's Club of Bend, Inc. We are a social organization w/members who pay dues. Our budget reflects a 0 balance each year. We take in no more than $7000 per year. We have documentation from the State of Oregon that we are a 501 c 7. We have two conflicting documents from the IRS. The original document, from our 2009 incorporation date, says that we are automatically recognized as a 501 c 3. When I wrote to them recently, they responded that we are not in their system (even though we have an EIN (61-1405894) and have been filing 990Ns since inception, and are in the IRS.gov website. Is it possible to have an EIN number and not be registered? How can we change from a 3 to a 7, if that is the case. Thank you.

EINs are fairly easy to come by for any business or organization. There is no need to have any special non-profit status to get an EIN. Below is a website from the irs that may be useful. https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/form-990-resources-and-tools

You should probably hire a tax attorney who specializes in tax exempt organizations to get to the bottom of this. It shouldn't cost too much since it should only take a few hours to fact find and get the organization headed in the right direction.

It sounds like a phone call to the IRS might help. There is a number on their website: https://www.irs.gov/charities-non-profits/search-for-charities. If that doesn't work, a tax professional could call on the practitioners' number to clear up the confusion. Generally the letter granting tax exempt status is evidence of the organization type, but it sounds like you don't really qualify for (c)(3) status, and you don't want people to deduct contributions and then have to give back the deductions later, so you are right to want to clarify your status. I'd be happy to talk to you about it.
